Ethernet Patch Cable Colors

A friend of mine and I are having a debate.
He and I both agree that 'electrically' the order of your Ethernet patch cable wiring shouldn't matter, as long as you're consistent. If you chose some crazy wire color pattern, who cares, as long as it was the same.
However, I have run into a situation where a cable was just wired by somebody else using their own made up pattern, and although the switch recognized a 'physical' connection. Actually physical and datalink, it WOULD NOT obtain an IP address via DHCP, and if the IP was hard coded, it still wouldn't work.
So what I want to know is: WHY? I just can't imagine that the blue/blue white wire has any special properties over the green/green white wire that would throw off the communication. So why is it that a computer that shows it's connected just won't work unless it's wired according to the TIA standard (586B in this case)?
